Sunday: Community Clean-up! September 20th, 2015

September 18, 2015

Join us for our Annual Community Clean-up! Sunday September 20th, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Winston Heights Community Center.

This is an amazing way to do your fall cleaning! All you have to do is come by the Community Centre between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and drop off anything that you may want to clear out of your house, office, garage, etc.

GEEP, will be on hand to handle any electronics or appliances (no refrigerators) you may need to be rid of. North Hill Bottle Depot will also be on hand. And as always, City of Calgary crews will be there with Two Trucks for Waste and One truck for Organic Waste. That means you can bring by anything their compactor trucks can handle and from what I’ve been told, they can handle just about anything that doesn’t have too much metal in it. So that means, mattresses, book cases, couches, end tables, you name it! And the organic truck can handle exactly that, organic waste like yard waste, compost etc.

For your general information, no batteries (other than car batteries), no chemicals, no paint, no Freon-containing appliances are accepted anywhere other than the firestations.

This service is completely free to all Wintson Heights/Mounview community residents!

We’d like to send a big Thank You to Tony Nicastro, as Nicastro’s Public House will be on hand providing sausages!

Then come and join us at the Winston Heights-Mountview Playgroup held at the Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre. We have great toys for the kids to play with and this is a great way to get out and meet others. Playgroup is held each Monday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. and lasts to 11:30 a.m (starting up again September 14, 2015).

This is an informal, non-registered playgroup, so no need to sign up, just come out and join us on Monday mornings – we love to meet new families in the neighbourhood!  If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Sarah Wiedmer Jarabak at playgroup@winstonheights.ca.

Also, if you’d be interested in having a ‘story time’ during playgroup, please contact me via e-mail. If we have enough interest, I will organize a Calgary Public Library public outreach coordinator to schedule us in for regular story times. They bring books on a specific theme and read a few to the children while guardians quietly visit. The books are even available to be checked out if you bring your library card with you.

Act III”, an Elder Friendly Community serving Winston Heights Mountview and surrounding communities and meets at the Winston Heights-Mountview Community Centre the first Thursday of every month, usually from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

Please join us; you are welcome!!

ACT III VISION

We are a community of older adults who are working to enhance our neighbourhoods by developing a culture of valuing and respecting the wisdom and experience of older adults. We envision a place where there is easy mobility, safety, and services to support aging-in-place. Everyone is included and welcome. Embracing everyone in the community, older adults, families, people from diverse cultures and all those who seek community connections, we identify needs, hold meaningful conversations, generate enthusiasm and facilitate action to become the most inclusive and welcoming community possible.

ACT III MISSION

Embracing everyone in the community, older adults, families, people from diverse cultures and all those who seek community connections, we identify needs, hold meaningful conversations, generate enthusiasm and facilitate action to become the most inclusive and welcoming community possible.

Events:

Yoga Classes with Dianne resume on September 8 and continue every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM at the community hall.

Caring Community Kitchen is up and running. Twelve members of the UU community and Act III came together in the kitchen of the Unitarian Church on Saturday, July 11 in the first Caring Cooking Connection using money received from the Calgary Foundation Stepping Stones Grant. A wonderful meal was created: Curry Glazed Chicken with rice, garden fresh chard, and a green salad freshly picked from the garden as well. After the cooking, a communal meal, and kitchen clean-up, 12 more meals were stored in the freezer for distribution to those in need in the wider community.

Our next event will be Wednesday, September 23 from 5-8pm. The menu will be determined the week of cooking. Please email Bev (webberbev@gmail.com) if you would like more information or to attend.

There will be lots of time for Q & A.

Today! Public Engagement Information – nextCITY’s Main Streets

February 7, 2015

mainstreet
Public Engagement Information – 16th Avenue North, Centre St N & Edmonton Trail NE

We’re exploring how growth could happen in a meaningful way for your main street neighbourhood. Through nextCITY’s Main Streets initiative, we will hear from residents, businesses, industry professionals and other main street visitors, to make informed, strategic planning decisions about the future success of Calgary’s thriving main streets.
In our first events (in November), we saw Community Associations and Business Revitalization Zones take an active role in promoting Main Streets events and encouraging community members to participate in workshops. This resulted in well attended, productive workshops, with great input and discussions between residents and City planners.
