Urban Hen Feed Co. community chicken feed program

🐔 Urban Hen Feed Co.

Local Feed Supporting Local Agriculture

A community-based feed pickup initiative supporting backyard chicken keepers, the Winston Heights–Mountview Community Chicken Coop Pilot, and free urban hen education.

🌻 Why We Started This

Many backyard chicken keepers currently drive 20–30 minutes outside Calgary to purchase feed from farm supply stores. For smaller flocks, that trip can cost more in time and fuel than the feed itself.

Our goal is to make responsible urban hen keeping a little easier while helping support the broader community chicken coop initiative.

  • Provide a convenient local feed pickup option
  • Support the community chicken coop pilot
  • Help fund free urban hen education workshops
  • Build a local network of backyard chicken keepers
  • Connect urban residents with local agriculture

🚜 Our Local Farm Partner: Guldberg Farms

We are proud to be working with Guldberg Farms, a local Alberta grain farm and commercial feed mill located near Calgary.

Guldberg Farms produces several crops each season and manufactures livestock feed for producers throughout the region. Their practical knowledge of poultry nutrition, feed quality, storage, and biosecurity has helped shape this program in a responsible way.

Rather than repackaging feed into reused containers, the program is being designed around sealed bagged feed supplied by Guldberg Farms. This keeps the process cleaner, safer, and simpler while reducing biosecurity and regulatory concerns.

Guldberg Farms has also expressed support for the community-focused nature of the project, including the connection between urban lifestyles, agriculture, local food education, and community food resilience.

🌾 Feed Supply

Feed will be supplied in sealed bags from Guldberg Farms. This approach helps maintain feed quality and avoids the safety, storage, regulatory, and biosecurity concerns that can come with repackaging or distributing feed in reused containers.

Residents looking for the lowest direct price are encouraged to purchase directly from Guldberg Farms through their regular sales channels. The community pickup option is intended for residents who value local convenience or want their purchase to help support the community coop initiative.

🥚 Pricing

Final product details, pricing, and pickup schedules will be posted before launch.

Pricing will include the cost of the feed, local pickup coordination, and a small contribution toward the community chicken coop pilot and free education programming.

The added cost is not meant to compete with direct farm pricing. It reflects the convenience of local pickup and directly supports community programming.

📖 Full Cost Transparency

We believe community programs should be clear about where funds go. Any remaining funds after feed costs will go directly toward:

  • Feed for the community chicken coop flock
  • Maintenance of the coop and run infrastructure
  • Supplies for urban hen education sessions
  • Future improvements to the program

Nothing is hidden. The goal is not to create a commercial resale operation, but to make local feed access easier while helping the community chicken coop become self-sustaining.

🏡 Supporting the Community Chicken Coop

The Winston Heights–Mountview Community Chicken Coop Pilot will house up to 12 hens.

Those hens are expected to require approximately 90 lb of feed per month.

A small number of regular local feed purchases can help cover the coop’s ongoing feed needs while supporting free community education around urban hen care.

  • Support local food education
  • Fund free urban hen workshops
  • Maintain coop infrastructure
  • Strengthen community food resilience
  • Connect urban residents with Alberta agriculture

🎓 Learning From Local Agriculture

One of the goals of the Urban Hen Program is to help residents better understand where food comes from and how modern agriculture works.

We are exploring opportunities with Guldberg Farms to support future education sessions, including practical topics such as:

  • Poultry nutrition and complete feed
  • How feed is produced and formulated
  • Alberta grain farming
  • Responsible backyard hen care
  • Biosecurity and flock health

Our hope is that the program not only supports backyard chicken keepers, but also strengthens connections between urban communities and the agricultural producers who help feed them.

🧺 Optional Seasonal Add-Ons

From time to time, we may explore optional seasonal poultry treats or specialty items, subject to availability.

These may include items such as poultry treats, winter feed supports, or other flock care products. Details will be posted if they become available.

📍 Pickup Information

Feed pickup will be available locally through the Winston Heights–Mountview Community Association.

Pickup dates, ordering details, product availability, and payment instructions will be posted on this page as the program launches.

🌾 A Small Community Idea

This project is meant to be simple, practical, and community-driven.

By keeping things transparent and local, we hope to make backyard chicken keeping a little easier while supporting the community chicken coop, free education, and stronger connections between neighbours and local agriculture.
