Finally Spring

April 23, 2012

It’s voting day!

Don’t forget to vote today, Monday April 23, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. in the Alberta Election at the Winston Heights – Mountview (WHM) Community Hall, 520 27 Avenue N.E.  For information on the provincial general election Candidates in the WHM area, visit the following link:  Electoral District 17 – Calgary – Klein

Another incredible season is coming to a close in Winston Heights – Mountview (WHM).  Calgary winters have the ability to chill us through to our bones, but thanks to a few kind-hearted and hard-working volunteers, this winter was filled with activities to keep the entire family warm: Community Potlucks, a Winter Festival, a Christmas Craft and Bake Sale, a Wine and Cheese Eve, and of course Grassroots Hockey. What a coup to have our very own skating rink in the community for the entire family to use.  Thanks to Stacy (WHM Lead Iceman), Doug and James who worked throughout the winter months to ensure the Winston Heights – Mountview skating rink was in pristine condition for community residents to use.

Now that spring has finally arrived, a few events at the Winston Heights – Mountview Community Hall, 520 27 Avenue N.E., should definitely be marked on our calendars for the upcoming month of May:

Saturday, May 12 – Mother’s Day Planter Workshop, 10 a.m. – noon

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to prepare a container garden.  Just in time for Mother’s Day, it is a morning for you and your mother to spend quality time together. Workshop fee is $10/adult, $2/child.  All you need to bring is a 12″ planting pot.   Soil, water and plants are included in the fee.  Contact garden@winstonheights.ca to register.

Tuesday, May 15 – Winston Heights – Mountview Annual General Meeting, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

This is your chance to make a change. Voice your opinion, ask questions, state your demands. The Winston Heights-Mountview Board of Directors wants to know what you think will improve this community. We will discuss community accomplishments of the past year and provide updates on major projects affecting the community. Contact christine.johns@ucalgary.ca for more information.

Friday, May 18 – Community Potluck, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Join your neighbors for a community feast. This is a great way to make connections in your neighborhood and to share a few of your favourite family recipes. Contact Mary-Beth @ 403.209.1691 for more information.

One more thing,

We want your photos!  If you catch an inspiring moment in the Winston Heights – Mountview area, send it to communications@winstonheights.ca and you just might find it in an upcoming issue of our newsletter or on our social media sites.

Enjoy your spring!

“Neighbour” by Clea Roddick

October 18, 2011

At the recent Membership Pancake Breakfast we premièred our newest project, a music video for Clea Roddick’s song “Neighbour”. The video stars the people and places of Winston Heights-Mountview and we couldn’t be more proud of the outcome.

The idea for the video came from board member Sarah Arthurs who had heard Clea’s song one day on CBC Radio and was struck by the lyrics, specifically the phrase “how will we make it through the ages when we don’t even know the neighbours?” She came to the next board meeting with the suggestion about making a music video featuring our community. The board loved the idea and agreed to help fund it. The next thing you knew, Clea was on board, The Calgary Foundation had agreed to redirect some leftover project funds, and the production company Fresh and Smoked was brainstorming ideas with community members. Quickly after that filming started and the video below is the outcome.

We’re proud of our neighbourhood and our neighbours and we’re happy to share that enthusiasm with the world. Enjoy!
