Community Garden Annual Meeting

The Annual Garden Meeting is Wednesday, April 8th at 7:30pm in the North Hall of the Community Association. The evening will include a summary of the garden bed rental policies, a gardening workshop, and refreshments with your fellow community members.

Gardeners who wish to rent a bed should attend this meeting to learn more about Garden policies, pay the balance of their rental, and sign rental agreements. We will also sign up new renters at this time.

Community Garden Beds Available

With spring approaching, it is time to think of getting out in the fresh air and growing wholesome food alongside your neighbours. The WHM Community Garden has beds available to rent this year, at a cost of $50, though you may secure your rental with a deposit of $20 before April 8th.

If you would like to secure your rental for 2015, please drop off a cheque at the South Hall of the Community Association for $20, marked “Garden Bed Renewal Deposit”, along with your name and contact information. Norm, our tireless and indispensable hall caretaker, is in the hall from 10am to noon on weekdays if you would prefer to pay cash. Additionally, if you wish, you can send your $20 deposit as an Interac Email Money Transfer to caretaker@winstonheights.ca. Please be sure to include your name if you choose the latter, so we can be sure to assign the deposit to you.

Please email communitygarden@winstonheights.ca if you have any questions.

Community Garden Phase 2 Build

The Community Garden Association would like to announce that we have been approved to build phase 2 of the garden! As such, we will be having a weekend build in late April. All community members are welcome!

We are still looking for volunteers:

1) The Winston Heights Mountview Community Garden Committee is seeking an additional member with an interest in program planning who would like to help plan and manage programs such as the Philanthropic Beds and a program that links the garden with local schools. This volunteer position will require an average commitment of 7.25 hours per month, including a monthly meeting and varying action items, with more time required in the summer months and less in the winter and spring. This position offers opportunities for community engagement, influence in the direction of the community garden and opportunities to enhance your leadership skills.

This volunteer position will require an average commitment of 7.25 hours per month, including monthly meetings and varying action items. If you’re interested in joining the Community Garden Committee in either the Program Planning or the Administrative Support roles, please contact Stephanie Phillips at sdphillips14@gmail.com or at (403)295-9444. No previous involvement with the garden is required.

4 DAYS LEFT to VOTE! 2015 Avenue Best Neighbourhoods Survey

February 24, 2015

Only 4 days left to VOTE!
The 2015 Avenue Best Neighbourhoods Survey

For the sixth consecutive year, Avenue magazine is asking Calgary residents for their feedback with an all-new Best Neighbourhoods Survey at AvenueCalgary.com/survey. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and closes Feb. 28, 2015.

Avenue awards the Best Neighbourhood distinction based on survey responses and data analysis. “We ask respondents which factors and amenities make a neighbourhood great, from walkability to transit access and grocery stores,” says Avenue editor Käthe Lemon. “This means respondents have a say in how all neighbourhoods, not just their own, are ranked.”

To develop the survey, Avenue partnered with Leger Marketing to create a series of questions that will determine which community characteristics Calgarians deem most desirable. The top-ranked neighbourhoods for 2015 will be those that best fulfill those criteria. Avenue uses third-party data, such as crime statistics and property values, when ranking Calgary’s neighbourhoods.

“With our Best Neighbourhoods survey, we are able to get to the heart of what matters to Calgarians about the communities they call home,” Lemon says.

Last year, Arbour Lake was ranked Avenue’s Best Neighbourhood, not only for its high level of community involvement, but for its proximity to public transportation, parks and pathways, and amenities like recreation facilities, day cares, grocery stores, pubs and a movie theatre. Ranked second and third were the Beltline and Brentwood, respectively.

Calgarians can make sure they have a say in the Avenue Best Neighbourhoods 2015 results by filling out the survey before Feb. 28 at AvenueCalgary.com/survey. Watch for the results online and in Avenue magazine in August.

We all know how great Winston Heights-Mountview is, so lets make sure the rest of Calgary knows!

Today! Public Engagement Information – nextCITY’s Main Streets

Public Engagement Information – 16th Avenue North, Centre St N & Edmonton Trail NE

We’re exploring how growth could happen in a meaningful way for your main street neighbourhood. Through nextCITY’s Main Streets initiative, we will hear from residents, businesses, industry professionals and other main street visitors, to make informed, strategic planning decisions about the future success of Calgary’s thriving main streets.
In our first events (in November), we saw Community Associations and Business Revitalization Zones take an active role in promoting Main Streets events and encouraging community members to participate in workshops. This resulted in well attended, productive workshops, with great input and discussions between residents and City planners.
