Beyond Kale

The Story Behind Beyond Kale

Beyond Kale is a sprouting network of community gardens in Calgary’s Northeast and Northwest. They aspire to respond to the demand for gardening-related educational and networking opportunities within these communities.

The gardens currently under the Beyond Kale umbrella, include Capitol Hill, Mount Pleasant, Calgary Unitarians, Crescent Heights, and of course, Winston Heights-Mountview. Beyond Kale webinars are hosted, in turn, by these gardens and everyone is welcome to attend any or all events. They expect to welcome more community gardens into the fold in the future.

The Beyond Kale Goals are:

  • To increase the knowledge, skills, and confidence of Calgary gardeners
  • To show gardeners how to adapt to our unique Calgary soil and climate conditions
  • To share ideas regarding fundraising within gardens
  • To highlight community gardens as social hubs within neighbourhoods
  • To support the creation and maintenance of sustainable, beautiful, and productive gardens

Janet Melrose will lead our workshops. She is an author, garden educator, designer, and horticultural therapist, with extensive experience within the community garden movement in Calgary.

The Beyond Kale workshops aim to inspire, educate, and nurture the green thumb in each gardener.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, upcoming workshops will be held online. The March 10th workshop is hosted by the Capitol Hill Community Garden and tickets are available through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.ca/o/beyond-kale-29978535008

Thank You Rink Volunteers

The WHMCA rink has had one of its best years in recent memory. There were periods on most days of Christmas break and recent weekends where there were 25-35 people enjoying the ice. This was still legal given Covid restrictions limiting numbers to 40 people on the main rink and 18 people on the oval and everyone needing to stay 2 m apart.  Please remember to maintain spacing so we can continue to enjoy the great outdoors!

Cleaning and flooding the rink has been occurring several times per week (sometimes twice per day!). Many thanks to Jarret, Marco, Mike, Ian, Colin and especially Shayne and his parents Gail & Frank for putting in so much work.  Please thank them if you see them working!

A sub-committee has been started to look at fundraising for purchasing a new sweeper.  Getting a new sweeper for next winter is critical since we had to scavenge parts to keep one sweeper functional in early January.  If you are interested in helping please contact Alex Reed at rink@winstonheights.ca.

Winston Heights Mountview 55+ Survey

Your Winston Heights-Mountview Community Association currently has a few programs in place for our 55+ members (book club, learn to programs…). We would like input from our 55+ community members to be able to develop and introduce additional programs for the various age groups that will be well received and attended.

We are also interested in adding some programs that are lead by our 55+ members. Our “learn to” programs is a current example where our 55+ members taught classes on jelly making, pierogi making and Asian cooking. Maybe you are interested in teaching a “learn to” class?

In the past year, with COVID-19, we also learned that having access to online programs may also be of benefit. We need to know how many of our community members have access to technology (cell phone, tablet, laptop, desktop) and if you are comfortable using this technology should we be able to provide online classes.

We need your input. Please take the time to fill in our survey. One Survey per person.

Thank you on behalf of,

Your 55+ Active Corner, committee.

Tonight! Special General Meeting: January 25, 2021 @ 7pm

January 25, 2021

A Special General Meeting is being called for Monday, January 25th at 7pm.  Per the community association’s bylaws, the Board is required to notify the community in writing 21 days prior to a Special General Meeting.  This meeting is being held to vote on a necessary motion.

The WHMCA Finance committee is recommending the following:

The WHMCA Board of Directors proposes submitting an application for the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) in the amount of $60,000. If the loan balance is repaid on or before December 31, 2022, 33% of the loan ($20,000) will be forgiven. CEBA provides WHMCA with a measure of security along with an incentive for timely repayment. The amount forgiven would be used to replenish capital reserves.
