Happy Holidays and Merry New Year. Let’s Skate!

December 25, 2012

Ice Rinks Now Open!

Bring out your skates!  Haul out your hockey equipment!  It’s time to enjoy the best of winter!

The central ice rink and the skating oval at the WHMCA community hall are now open!  Not only that, the Adopt-A-Rink in the park on Marsden Road is open also!  Both rinks are available for free skating any time of day.  Hockey can also be played on the central ice rink at the community hall.  Both rinks will be lit for use in the evenings until 10:30 pm.

The central ice rink at the community hall has been reserved for the following activities each week starting in January:

Mondays – 6 – 9 pm Brownies
Tuesdays – 6 – 9 pm Grassroots Hockey

Fridays – 3 – 6 pm Girls Ringette

Saturdays – 1 – 3 pm Free Skate For All (non-hockey)

The oval will still be open for skating at these times.

Please be aware that the rinks will be closed on occasion to permit flooding of the ice, and also to clear snow.  When necessary, parts of the rinks may be roped off with orange pylons if there are problems with the ice.

Many thanks are due to Stacy Nephin and his team for getting the community hall rinks up and running this year.  Thanks also to Craig Baskett for setting up and maintaining the Marsden Road Adopt-A-Rink.  We will post a full list of people to thank shortly.

Neighbourhood Crime Alert

June 5, 2012

This is the Calgary Police Service with a PCAP message for the communities of Crescent Hts., Bridgeland, Renfrew, & Winston Heights-Mountview.

The Calgary Police Service would like to advise that there has recently been an unusual increase in residential break and enters in the communities of Crescent Heights, Bridgeland, Renfrew and Winston Heights-Mountview.

Entry to homes was gained by shouldering or prying front and back doors. Jewelry, electronic devices, and cash were taken. The Calgary Police Service is reminding residents to take extra precautions when securing your residence and vehicle.

Report suspicious persons or vehicles to the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234. Call 9-1-1 if you see a crime in progress. You may also report criminal activity anonymously to Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Another incredible season is coming to a close in Winston Heights – Mountview (WHM).  Calgary winters have the ability to chill us through to our bones, but thanks to a few kind-hearted and hard-working volunteers, this winter was filled with activities to keep the entire family warm: Community Potlucks, a Winter Festival, a Christmas Craft and Bake Sale, a Wine and Cheese Eve, and of course Grassroots Hockey. What a coup to have our very own skating rink in the community for the entire family to use.  Thanks to Stacy (WHM Lead Iceman), Doug and James who worked throughout the winter months to ensure the Winston Heights – Mountview skating rink was in pristine condition for community residents to use.

Now that spring has finally arrived, a few events at the Winston Heights – Mountview Community Hall, 520 27 Avenue N.E., should definitely be marked on our calendars for the upcoming month of May:

“Neighbour” by Clea Roddick

October 18, 2011

At the recent Membership Pancake Breakfast we premièred our newest project, a music video for Clea Roddick’s song “Neighbour”. The video stars the people and places of Winston Heights-Mountview and we couldn’t be more proud of the outcome.

The idea for the video came from board member Sarah Arthurs who had heard Clea’s song one day on CBC Radio and was struck by the lyrics, specifically the phrase “how will we make it through the ages when we don’t even know the neighbours?” She came to the next board meeting with the suggestion about making a music video featuring our community. The board loved the idea and agreed to help fund it. The next thing you knew, Clea was on board, The Calgary Foundation had agreed to redirect some leftover project funds, and the production company Fresh and Smoked was brainstorming ideas with community members. Quickly after that filming started and the video below is the outcome.

We’re proud of our neighbourhood and our neighbours and we’re happy to share that enthusiasm with the world. Enjoy!
