Doug Urquhart, a cartoonist in Whitehorse, Yukon, once observed that “as a long-time resident of small northern communities, I have often witnessed how such towns rely on relatively few and capable and dedicated people.  It is called the ‘20-80 rule’ – 20% of the people do 80% of the work.  When such people leave town, chaos ensues.”  Even though Winston Heights-Mountview is in the heart of the large city of Calgary, in many ways we are a small community in which we are dependent on each other.

I am proud that the WHMCA has had board members in the last few years that have brought tremendous skills and drive to make the community association better and more appealing to the neighbourhood and larger city.  However, obligations of family and work have led many current board members to step away from this volunteer role.  We are at the point where it is difficult to reach quorum (legal minimum of attendees) at some board meetings.

I am appealing to you now to consider joining the WHMCA Board of Directors.  You will have a say in how to deal with matters relative to the welfare of the Community as a whole.  You will have a say in how social engagements and volunteering activities are organized.  You will have the chance to learn first-hand how a small business operates.  If you can make a commitment of one to three years that would be fabulous.  Board meetings are 7-9 pm on the first Tuesday of each month, excepting August.

Come and sit in on a board meeting.  You may be surprised by the friendships, purpose and laughter you find.  Please contact me at president@winstonheights.ca or 587-582-5342
