The Centennial Garden in front of our community hall was completed in 2007 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Winston Heights Mountview Community. It is intended to be a gathering place for community members and to beautify our hall grounds. Come out and enjoy our garden.
For those interested in volunteering: Our garden is maintained by dedicated volunteers. Anyone can join this group of volunteers simply by sending us an e-mail. Come out and join us. We would love to have you on our team. Don’t worry if you are not a ‘gardener’, we are all growing and learning together.
How it works: You adopt and maintain a section of the garden (as big or small as you feel you can manage. Most sections are about 5 feet long and the width of the planting berm).
Watering: We have an automatic sprinkler system and that takes care of the majority of the watering.
Planting: Based on our budget we purchase plants each year to add to the garden. We add perennials to continue to develop the structure of the garden and more and more we have been adding annuals for their continuing colour throughout the seasons. You don’t have to worry about the planting, this is completed by a few of the lead team members. Of course; if you want to help with the planting you are always welcome to assist.
Weeding and Deadheading: This is where you come in. You maintain your adopted garden section and remove any weeds. When flowers are spent you also deadhead them (clip off the dead flowers). For perennials it’s important to deadhead as it cleans up the plant and the appearance of the garden. For annuals deadheading helps as the plant is trying to produce seeds in order to procreate its species. By removing the spent flower, where the seeds would develop, the plant continues to do the work to produce more flowers. This way we continue to get flowers throughout the season.
Timing: You can do your volunteer work when it suits you best. There is no set time or day that you have to be at the garden. We just ask you to keep your area clear of weeds and to keep in touch and let us know if you will be away for holidays so that we can keep an eye on your section. Communication: From time to time over the summer you will receive emails. These are usually to keep you informed if there is anything happening (eg: if there is an event booked at the hall, usually on weekends, they often don’t want us digging in the garden during their event).
